Samsung Galaxy Note7 makes an explosive appearanceThe explosive Galaxy Note7 pictured in stores before its' recall. Months after, many reports were recieved of the phone exloding while charging.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has sparked some concern among consumers, literally. The lithium-ion battery found in this smartphone as well as other smartphones has been catching fire in this new device.
In late August, a Galaxy Note 7 exploded while charging. This was followed by an explosion of similar reports. The phones seemed to erupt in flames while charging, which posed a great danger to users. Samsung recalled the device in early September after several reports of this incident. Then they later released a new issue of the phone. Approximately one million phones were returned. Those who purchased the first release of the phone could now trade it in for an upgraded Note 7 or a Galaxy S7. However, these new and “improved” versions of the phone were quite explosive as well. As of October 15, the phone has been banned on all flights by The Department of Transportation. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, “If passengers attempt to travel by air with their Samsung Galaxy Note7 devices, they will be denied boarding.”, “The Samsung Galaxy Note7 device is considered a forbidden hazardous material under the Federal Hazardous Material Regulations.” The Note 7 poses such a hazardous threat that it has been banned from Amtrak trains as well. The advisors of The Department of Transportation believe the phone is too dangerous to allow onboard, as it could explode and start a fire. Consumers are being offered up to $100 credit if they exchange their Note 7 device for another Samsung smartphone. If they wish to receive cash back for their device, they can receive up to $25. Samsung urges customers to return their devices for new ones to avoid any additional incidents. Technology Department Receives Big GrantA student welds materials for his technology department class using one of the new ten welders. Photo by Molly Merson
The technology department received a grant of $5,000 from the Red Lion Area Education Foundation. The head of the department, Mr. Heath Neff, used the donation to purchase new equipment for his tech ed classes.
As of last year, the technology department had five welders with approximately only three of them fully functioning. “It was difficult to teach 18 students using only three welders,” Mr. Neff said. When given the grant, Mr. Neff hoped to used it to it’s best efficiency for the department. “You have to think about the biggest need you have,” Mr. Neff said. “It made more sense to purchase new ones rather than update the old ones for a higher price.” These welders will hopefully improve and enhance the welding class experience for students. They arrived by Mid-October. The Red Lion Area Education Foundation manages the funds and educational opportunities for the district. It entails scholarships, technology grants, dental plans, and educational projects. The foundation has supported more than forty grants totalling $95,000 according to the Red Lion Area School District website. The foundation made a similar donation last year in hopes of improving the technology department’s equipment. They decided to make a similar donation this year with the same goal. This much-needed grant allowed Mr. Neff to purchase ten new welders for his welding classes. I enjoyed writing this article because I got the chance to go to a technology department classroom and take pictures of students using the new equipment. I learned more about the technology students and what they do with their equipment.
November student of the monthJuniors Carrie Knight and Qui Li pose at the Rotary Club meeting with their awards. They were given these awards in November and declared students of the month.
Junior Carrie Knight has been declared one of the two Rotary Club Students of the Month for December. Her academic involvement and achievements made her a deserving candidate for this position.
Since the start of her high school career, she has been on the Distinguished Honor Roll. “I make sure to do my homework and study a lot,” Knight said. She strives to do her best in each class she’s involved in. “I got a physics tutor this year and it helped me a lot.” Despite receiving straight A’s, Carrie is still an everyday student like her peers. Carrie credits her academic success to her older sister Kelsi who graduated from Red Lion Area Senior High School in 2015. Her sister has been her role model ever since she was young. “She always had Distinguished Honor Roll in high school. She’s probably the reason I do well,” Knight said. Aside from academic achievements, Carrie likes to spend time with her her family and friends. She lives on a farm and has an interest in farm culture. She has a pet cow named Maggie that she likes to feed and spend time with. She also enjoys taking pictures at home. Photography has been an interest of Carrie’s since sixth grade. “I’d like to go to York College to major in business and minor in photography,” Knight said. “It’s close to home and my sister currently goes there.” She hopes to have a profession that involves taking pictures when she is older. I liked writing this spotlight piece because I got to interview a student one-on-one and learn more about her individually. This helped me gather more facts about her such as her hobbies, interests, and personal life outside of school. This insight added detail to my piece and allowed the reader to get to know Carrie more.

Donald Trump abortion editorialDear President-elect Trump,
“Look, I’m very pro-choice. I hate the concept of abortion. I hate it. I hate everything it stands for. I cringe when I listen to people debating the subject, but you still — I just believe in choice” were your exact words in 1999. However, within the same year, you did not urge to to ban a process called late-term abortion. This is the process of removing the fetus beyond the ninth month of its development if the mother’s life is at stake or if the fetus has severe birth defects. In another report done by The Washington Post, you changed your own viewpoint on abortion 5 times in 3 days by making different claims. That sounds a bit indecisive. Not to mention, in an interview with CNN reporter Jake Tapper, you contradicted yourself when asked about your standing. Tapper began by acknowledging that you were opposed to abortion. This was followed by you saying, “Right. I'm pro-choice.” In confusion, Tapper then asked, “You're pro-choice or pro-life?” You then apologized and claimed to be “pro-life.” In an April 2016 report, you claimed you wanted to keep the laws regarding abortion as they are now. You believe that the states should make the decision when it comes to abortion. Your viewpoints contradict themselves. I would say “it's safe to say our president is port-abortion rights,” but then again, you may not be by tomorrow. It's crucial for you to have a solid standing on topics you're going to face as president of the United States. Although you would be going against fellow Republicans by supporting abortion rights , you would at least have a standing on it. Whether you're pro-abortion rights or anti-abortion, it's time to stop contradicting yourself. From, Molly Merson This is one of my favorite pieces because I don't often write opinion pieces. It was fun to be able to express my opinions about a topic and have it published. I enjoyed gathering information and facts to back up my opinions,
Main street shops stock up for Christmas“We’re just interested in getting people playing music. We don’t have an ego.” Twinkling lights, window displays, and Christmas trees. Main Street is a popular area for Red Lion residents, especially during the holidays. The street is filled with various shops such as a candy store, music store, and guitar shop. With the holidays approaching, it’s no wonder that local shoppers flock to these stores for gifts of all kinds.
Tom Anderton, owner of Tom’s Music Trade, has already decorated his store for the holidays and is all set for the season. After working at the location for 11 years, Anderton has learned that customers tend to shop for Christmas early. “Sales peak right around the last week of November and keep up until Christmas,” Anderton said. Anderton keeps a sale running throughout December where customers can buy three DVD’s, blu ray discs, or CD’s and get one free. Right next door lies Guitar Shop U.S.A, exteriorly decorated with strings of lights and a small tree in the front window. Based on it’s location, this shop is one of the more popular instrument stores in York. “We always run cheap prices, we don’t need to have sales or specials,” said owner Chad Ward. “We’re just interested in getting people playing music. We don’t have an ego.” Guitar Shop U.S.A offers layaway deals on guitars. They also have lessons for $25 a half hour for people interested in learning to play. The shop’s main goal isn’t to profit off of sales, it’s more about getting people involved in music. Across the street, JJ’s Antiques, Toys, & Cards is owned by Jeff Jackson. He has owned this location for 33 years buying, selling, and trading cards. “I started collecting as a kid.” Jackson said. His interest in card collecting began when he was young, which drove him to opening a business based off of it. With a fairly large collection, Jackson has many cards to showcase in his store. The values of the cards range from 50 cents up to $350,000. This piece was very fun to write. I got the chance to go out into Red Lion and interview many local shop owners. I met new people I never had before and they were very appreciative of my interest. I was welcomed into each business and offered business cards in case I had any additional questions. The politeness and courtesy of each shop owner helped me gather more information to improve this piece.
Apple promises dramatic improvements with iPhone 7The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus released on Sept. 9. Apple has claimed that they now include features never before seen for an iPhone, such as increased battery life, better camera performance, and faster LTE connection. It’s said to improve the more important aspects of the iPhone experience.
The new device is designed with a splash and water resistant 7000 Series aluminum outer shell. This is so the iPhone is able to come into contact with water without being ruined. In addition to appearance, the design comes in rose gold, gold, silver, and the new black or jet black finishes. The iPhone 7 is claimed to have an LTE connection that is three times faster than the iPhone 6, with the best worldwide roaming data available in a smartphone according to Apple. It also entails larger speakers for higher quality sound. The new 12 megapixel back facing camera has been reengineered. The six-element lens is supposed to simplify shooting videos or photos in low light with its new light features. The optical image stabilization feature reduces blur associated with motion when taking a photo. However, in anticipation of the release of the Apple AirPods, the new iPhone design no longer includes a headphone jack. The new bluetooth AirPods are wireless earbuds that are to be released in October of 2016. If users are looking to use non-bluetooth headphones, they will need to use an adapter to plug into the charging area. This means that users can no longer use non-bluetooth headphones while charging their phones. Upon announcement, this new feature raises many questions for users. “I most likely won’t get the new iPhone,” senior Erin Scortino said. “I only use wire headphones.” The iPhone 7 release held up to its’ expectations with Apple shares jumping 3% since its’ release. The iPhone 7 has been greatly anticipated based on the vast improvements it features. Apple claims it to be the best performing iPhone yet. I like researching technology and learning about new devices being released. I find it entertaining to gather facts about new tecnological advancements and being able to relay it to the public.
