December student of the month
Junior Carrie Knight has been declared one of the two Rotary Club Students of the Month for December. Her academic involvement and achievements made her a deserving candidate for this position.
Since the start of her high school career, she has been on the Distinguished Honor Roll. “I make sure to do my homework and study a lot,” Knight said. She strives to do her best in each class she’s involved in. “I got a physics tutor this year and it helped me a lot.” Despite receiving straight A’s, Carrie is still an everyday student like her peers.
Carrie credits her academic success to her older sister Kelsi who graduated from Red Lion Area Senior High School in 2015. Her sister has been her role model ever since she was young. “She always had Distinguished Honor Roll in high school. She’s probably the reason I do well,” Knight said.
Aside from academic achievements, Carrie likes to spend time with her her family and friends. She lives on a farm and has an interest in farm culture. She has a pet cow named Maggie that she likes to feed and spend time with. She also enjoys taking pictures at home.
Photography has been an interest of Carrie’s since sixth grade. “I’d like to go to York College to major in business and minor in photography,” Knight said. “It’s close to home and my sister currently goes there.” She hopes to have a profession that involves taking pictures when she is

Main street shops stock up for ChristmasTwinkling lights, window displays, and Christmas trees. Main Street is a popular area for Red Lion residents, especially during the holidays. The street is filled with various shops such as a candy store, music store, and guitar shop. With the holidays approaching, it’s no wonder that local shoppers flock to these stores for gifts of all kinds. Tom Anderton, owner of Tom’s Music Trade, has already decorated his store for the holidays and is all set for the season. After working at the location for 11 years, Anderton has learned that customers tend to shop for Christmas early. “Sales peak right around the last week of November and keep up until Christmas,” Anderton said. Anderton keeps a sale running throughout December where customers can buy three DVD’s, blu ray discs, or CD’s and get one free. Right next door lies Guitar Shop U.S.A, exteriorly decorated with strings of lights and a small tree in the front window. Based on it’s location, this shop is one of the more popular instrument stores in York. “We always run cheap prices, we don’t need to have sales or specials,” said owner Chad Ward. “We’re just interested in getting people playing music. We don’t have an ego.” Guitar Shop U.S.A offers layaway deals on guitars. They also have lessons for $25 a half hour for people interested in learning to play. The shop’s main goal isn’t to profit off of sales, it’s more about getting people involved in music. Across the street, JJ’s Antiques, Toys, & Cards is owned by Jeff Jackson. He has owned this location for 33 years buying, selling, and trading cards. “I started collecting as a kid.” Jackson said. His interest in card collecting began when he was young, which drove him to opening a business based off of it. With a fairly large collection, Jackson has many cards to showcase in his store. The values of the cards range from 50 cents up to $350,000. April student of the monthMolly Merson
News and features editor Junior Brady Smith has obtained an honor roll status for his entire school career. His favorite school subjects involve math or history class. He also played golf and was involved in track during his junior year. Due to these statistics alongside his academic standards, Brady has been proclaimed student of the month for April. Smith has a passion for being in the outdoors. “I like to do pretty much anything outside.” Smith said. He enjoys hunting and fishing. In his spare time, he also likes to play baseball. Two of Brady’s grandfathers served in both the navy and army. He claims these family members as his inspiration to serve his country and be in the air force. After high school, he hopes to attend Penn State University to continue his schooling with the hopes of receiving a scholarship. “I want to join a reserved officer training course to be an airforce pilot,” Smith said. “I want to serve my country.” He even has experience with once flying a helicopter. He hopes to go to flight school and continue the legacy of his grandparents. |
February student of the monthJunior Julie Tran strives to do well in school. “I’d say my parents are my inspiration,” Tran said. “They immigrated to America and grew up not having much.” Julie hopes to do well in her future and sets high standards for what she can achieve.
Since junior high, Julie has obtained distinguished honor roll status. She was involved in the school musical “Music Man” in the pit orchestra. She’s also in mixed chorus, orchestra, string ensemble, and the aevidum club. Julie is very music-oriented, and has played the violin since third grade. Her involvement in extracurricular activities is only one of the many reasons why she was chosen for February student of the month. In her spare time, Julie enjoys going shopping at Park city Mall or reading. She enjoys reading sci-fi or fiction novels the most. She also has an interest in music and listening to a variety of artists. Her favorite subjects include math, chemistry, or biology. Which is why she hopes to major in chemistry or pre-med if the program is available at her future college. Julie hopes to attend the Ivy league University of Pennsylvania as her ultimate goal. “That’d probably be a dream school.” Tran said. She aims to continue her work ethic in college and hopefully get into the college of her dreams. |
Senior editorialMy high school career has taught me numerous things. I began freshman year being cautious of nearly every decision I made. I remember taking almost a week to realize the A100 wing was just below the A200’s. I’ve always disliked change, so the shift from junior high to high school wasn’t easy for me. I discovered a lot about myself during my freshman and sophomore years. Meeting new people and trying new things gave me the chance to form better friendships and find things I like to do. During my senior year, I learned the difference between what I thought growing up was and how it really is. I was never able to picture myself being this old, working at my job, or soon attending college. I hope I continue to discover more about myself and grow from my experiences in high school. I’ve learned, and still continue to learn that even the seemingly impossible can be attainable.

Thirteen red flags about thirteen reasons why

The 2007 novel Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher has recently been popularized by becoming a new Netflix series co-produced by Selena Gomez. It has grabbed social media’s attention alongside many adolescents that are fans of the story. The show features teenager Hannah Baker’s experience and struggles throughout high school. It revolves around Hannah’s experience with bullying and her eventual suicide. The story includes the thirteen reasons why Hannah completed suicide, hence the title “Thirteen reasons why”.
The sound of the story sounds a bit dark upon first glance, but many teenagers have been moved by Hannah’s experience. Whether that is a positive or negative emotional impact is up for debate. According to an article published by the New York Times, superintendents and school counselors have been concerned that the show glorifies the idea of suicide and could cause an increase in such behavior among vulnerable students. This is my take on the thirteen reasons why the tv series could be harmful and/or controversial.

- Some scenes displayed during certain episodes feature graphic situations involving self harm, sexual abuse, and suicide.
- 90% of those who complete suicide have some sort of mental illness. None of the episodes have any mentioning of mental health or any sort of mental illness. Thus, drawing attention away from how Hannah was feeling and more towards the action she ended up completing.
- Hannah was shown to have killed herself in order to get back at those who hurt her, which is a controversial mindframe being displayed to viewers.
- Many loose ends remained as the show came to a close, leaving viewers with Hannah’s suicide as the final image in their minds.
- The show displayed several unrealistic scenarios such as a counselor turning Hannah’s cry for help away. It leaves the viewer asking “Would a school counselor really react this way?”
- The use of thirteen tapes directed towards thirteen people that contributed to her death makes it seem as though those people are the direct cause of her suffering. Although Hannah was bullied and harassed, the blame should not solely be left on those that surrounded her. This is not an effective method to get one’s point across.
- The reason why the main character Clay is listed on the tapes is because he could not offer her a relationship. However, would this have saved Hannah? The underlying message makes it seem as though love could have stopped Hannah from competing suicide.
- The term said at the start of the episodes “Welcome to your tape” has become a new joke among some who have watched the show. For example, if something was said that upset you, a joking response today would be “Welcome to your tape.” This is taking away the seriousness of the situation and turning it into a joke.
- The cassette tapes were undiscovered while being passed along by all of the characters. Is it realistic to believe that among the eleven students shown, not a single one spoke out about it to a teacher or adult.
- The parents of Hannah Baker did not mention noticing all of the warning signs she displayed, such as cutting her hair dramatically and seeming withdrawn from friends.
- None of the incidents of sexual abuse were reported by those involved.
- In the series, certain character roles were altered in order to intensify the plotline. For example, Tony was seen as a vital character on the tapes in the series. However, in the book, he was seen only as a friend of Clay’s.
- The National School of Psychologists has released a warning for students and families regarding the viewing of the show.
Apple adds new seeds to iPhone 6s
By Molly Merson Staff writer
Apple has announced the release of the new iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, with many new exquisite features that the regular iPhone 6 and 6 Plus did not include.
The new device includes four microphones for improved video quality, along with a higher megapixel front-facing camera for better quality “selfies”. There is also a new color introduced to the sleek iPhone style. The color options consist of rose-gold, silver, gold, and space-gray.
In addition to design, a stronger glass screen is now in place to reduce screen cracking or scratching. The 6S will also have a 7000 series aluminum casing, the strongest material ever used for an iPhone. “There isn’t much of a difference that I noticed, except it’s 3D now.” Junior, Stephen Tierney said.
For those who spend a lot of time on the internet, the iPhone 6S now has a feature to connect to WiFi networks twice as fast as before. “It’s a lot faster, and force touch allows you to now peek into files without opening them,” Mr.Smith said. “I wouldn’t switch to any other phone."
Users now have the ability to take live photos that piece together like an animated GIF video. There are also a few exciting announcements for emoji emoticon users
The commonly used “emoji” included in the iPhone keyboard now includes a taco, unicorn, hotdog, and many other anticipated emoticons. The new phones were to be released September 25, 2015.
